| Maturity: | For long term storage the potatoes should be mature: Harvesting potatoes on time. |

| Temperature: | The storage temperature of potatoes is determined by the end use of the stored potatoes |
| Humidity: | The relative humidity should be between 90 and 95%. If Relative humidity gets below the 90% level the potatoes will dry out and wrinkle. |
| Light: | Potatoes should be stored in total and constant darkness. |
| Ventilation: | Minimal, to avoid dehydration, but remove surplus of CO2 generated by the live tubers in the storage. |
| Cleaning: | Potatoes that are going to be stored should not be cleaned before storage. The dirt coming from the field that sticks to the potato serves as a kind of protection. Before going into storage the potatoes should be culled and excessive lumps and stones should be removed. Preparing dirty potatoes for storage. |
| Systems: | 1. Simple wooden well ventilated boxes with lateral ventilation and climate control: box storage lateral ventilation complete climate control
2. Box storage with a suction wall or a pressure wall. For these last two systems well constructed wooden boxes are required: Storage boxes or bins 3. Bulk storage: bulk storage forced floor ventilation complete climate control. |
